SONA

SONGWRITERS OF
NORTH AMERICA (SONA)

SONA is a grassroots advocacy organization co-founded in 2014 by veteran songwriters Michelle Lewis and Kay Hanley in response to the abysmal royalty rates being paid to songwriters by streaming music services. In less than 5 years SONA has assembled some of the most fiercely passionate and hard-working people from all corners of the songwriting world to educate, strategize and mobilize.

A driving force behind the MUSIC MODERNIZATION ACT, SONA also independently sued the U.S. Department of Justice over what they felt was a dangerous and ill-informed ruling on 100% licensing that would have adversely changed the way performing rights societies ASCAP and BMI licensed their members’ compositions.

SONA, headquartered in Los Angeles, California, is governed by an all-songwriter, all-volunteer Executive Board and steering committee.

NMPA

NATIONAL MUSIC PUBLISHERS
ASSOCIATION (NMPA)

Founded in 1917, the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) is the trade association representing all American music publishers and their songwriting partners. Its mission is to protect, promote, and advance the interests of music’s creators. The NMPA is the voice of both small and large music publishers, and the leading advocate for publishers and their songwriter partners in the nation’s capital and in every area where publishers do business.

The goal of NMPA is to protect its members’ property rights on the legislative, litigation, and regulatory fronts. In this vein, the NMPA continues to represent its members in negotiations to shape the future of the music industry by fostering a business environment that furthers both creative and financial success. The NMPA has remained the most active and vocal proponent for the interests of music publishers in the U.S. and throughout the world, a continuing tradition of which the association is very proud.
